Hello Friends,

The 2011 fishing season has come to a close recently, and another fine year it was for both the fishing and the weather!  We had a late spring in 2011, which put our usual fishing patterns about one month behind.  Walleyes never really got up on the sand beaches in 2011.  Therefore, it was another spring of heading straight out to the reefs, many of which were located very close to Moonlite Bay Camp.  Northern Pike were of very good size in 2011, however, they were a little hard to find at first, due to the lack of weed growth caused by the late spring.  Smallmouth bass and musky fishing were just what you would expect on Lake of the Woods, exceptional on most days.

Hello Friends, the weather in 2010 was, overall, pretty comfortable on Lake of the Woods.  That is, when it wasn't raining of course.  Before I ever got up to the Lake, I was informed by the local Canadians that their winter and early spring were unseasonably warm.  The ice went out sometime in late March, which is approximately one month earlier than normal.  The trickle down effect from this was that everything that normally happens on the lake was also, approximately, one month ahead of schedule.

Hello friends, it was another high water year at Moonlite Bay Camp, on Lake of the Woods, in 2009.  I am not sure if the lake water has been high for the past five seasons, or if our main dock was built too low.  I can surely recall two nasty storms over the past two seasons, which saw the water rise at least two feet above our stationary dock.  I also recall driving boats right on top of the dock during these storms, in order to hold the dock down and stop it from lifting off the cribs.  Mother nature can sure keep you on your toes at times.  I am also glad I bought fourteen blue plastic, 55-gallon drums to hold down the dock.  We sure needed them again in 2009.

Hello friends, it was another high water year on Lake of the Woods in 2008. Hi water is a little bit better than low water because it means that we can get into the more shallow parts of the lake a little easier. Places like Obabikon Lake, Caribou Lake, and Burrow Bay, for example. The walleye and smallmouth bass fishing were as good or better than I have ever seen in my fifteen years on Lake of the Woods.

Hello Friends, the 2007 fishing season is now complete. A big thank you goes out to everyone who came up this season. The weather in 2007 always kept us guessing. Before we opened up in May, our area was experiencing drought conditions. With very little snow or rain all winter and during the first part of spring, this translated into a very low lake level for Lake of the Woods in May.

Hello Sportsmen and Sportswomen, the fishing season at Moonlite Bay Camp is finished for 2006. It sure was a hot and dry season. In May, we barely had to turn on the heat in any of the cabins. By mid June we were buying extra fans, and by July we were asking ourselves, “when will it cool down, and when will we get some rain.” We had a fire ban on from mid July until mid August. Despite all the hot dry weather, we still had exceptionally good fishing all season long.

The 2005 season is now finished for Moonlite Bay Camp. We would like to thank everyone who came up, for making it a truly exceptional season. The weather in May and the first half of June was cold and wet. I thought we were going to have a similar pattern to the one we had last year, when we had cool wet weather almost all season. Boy was I wrong! By mid June we really started to heat up, and that heat stayed with us until mid August. It is a good thing that our island location provides us a nice cool breeze to cool things off just a little. We also had many days when that cool breeze turned into a fairly strong wind, which made it a little difficult to control a boat and fish at the same time. For the most part, however, the weather we had was typical for our area, and the fish were generally whare they were supposed to be during the 2005 season. If it wasn’t for a little too much wind in late June and July, we would have had a perfect summer, weather wise.

The 2004 fishing season was a good one, despite a lot of cool and somewhat windy weather. The season started out with a foot of snow during the third week in May, and with a few exceptional days, the weather stayed windy and cool until July. We usually get about three summery months in northwest Ontario, this year it seemed like we had only one. This year was the exception and not the rule; however, I don’t want everyone thinking it’s always cold at Moonlite Bay Camp in northwest Ontario.
