International Border Crossings

Canadian border officials are on line, therefore, they have become increasingly vigilant in checking visitors for prior convictions such as DUI/DWI and other minor charges on record.  Any prior conviction, could potentially keep a person from visiting Canada.  There is a statute of limitations on these types of minor convictions.  It is a good idea to check ahead, before you make the trip, to make sure you won't get turned back at the border for a minor charge on a person's record.

If you, or someone in your group has a prior conviction, please email or call us for more information.  You can also receive help from Lucy Perillo at Canadian Border Crossing Services.  She can be reached at 1-800-438-7020.  Her website is www.bordercrossing.ca and her email is bordercrossing@mts.net.

Over the years I have crossed the International border many times.  Most of those crossings were fast and easy.  Every once in a while, I was slightly delayed and had my vehicle searched.  Either it was my turn, or I was a random sample.  It was no big deal.  Whether you are crossing into Canada from the U.S., or crossing into the U.S. from Canada I have a few suggestions:

  1. Remove your sunglasses.
  2. Turn off the radio or DVD player.
  3. Pull up to the window gently, when it is your turn.
  4. Have all of your passports ready to hand over to the customs official.
  5. Make eye contact with the customs official.
  6. Answer any of the questions a customs official has for you, as truthfully as you can.
  7. Answer any of the questions a customs official has for you, direct and to the point.
  8. Do not tell any jokes or make any wisecracks.
  9. Do not act like you are in a hurry.
  10. If you are delayed, try not to get upset or frustrated.
  11. Try to be as respectful, courteous, and polite as you can to the customs official.

Related Information:

  3. The speed limit on reserves is 60 kilometers per hour (35 mph).  You will drive through two reserves on your way to our landing.
  4. If you bring worms, pack them in bedding, not dirt.
  5. Each adult can bring one case of beer or one bottle of hard liquor, quart size, into Canada.
  6. Each adult can bring one carton of cigarettes into Canada.
  7. Each adult can bring up to 11 lbs of beef for personal use.
